On Saturday, we spent a wet, wild and woolly 6 hours driving from Franz Joseph Glacier to Wanaka. As we drove through Bruce Bay, we had to maneuver around debris washed up onto the road by the storm surge and around a truck plowing beach stones off the road. Some drivers ahead of us had to stop and pull branches off the road.
Just past Bruce Bay we stopped at a salmon farm, where we picked up some smoked fish and pate for dinner, before pushing on through Haast Past, an alpine pass surrounded by brooding forest and dotted with waterfalls. Due to all the rain, the waterfalls were flowing steadily, and we stopped several times to check them out.
The most impressive site was the bridge over the Gates of Haast. Sten shot the picture below from the bridge. The river was surging with tremendous power across the boulders in the riverbed. As we drove down into Wanaka, we left the rain and wind on the other side of the mountain range. We took a stroll around town to stretch our legs, then headed back to our hostel for dinner. One bite of the smoked salmon and Sten announced that he was going to be getting a smoker when we got home. I'm all for that.
