February 28, 2008 - Queenstown

The scenery here is really stunning. It is no wonder that Peter Jackson chose to film the Lord of the Rings trilogy here, or that Hugh Jackman is currently filming the third X-men movie around town. We keep commenting to each other how amazing it is. Unfortunately, our photos don't seem to be doing it justice. To see how beautiful it is, just watch any of the LOTR movies again. And while you're at it, see if you can figure out which LOTR scene Sten is reenacting in the picture below (yes, we're geeks). The first to tell us gets a bottle of New Zealand wine the next time we see them.
We love to hear kiwis and other travelers complain how crowded and expensive it is in Queenstown. Sure, the town center has a parking problem, but if we drive ten minutes out of town, we can have a walking track all to ourselves, like we did at Bob's Cove for a few hours this morning.
And I'm pretty sure that we couldn't touch a room like the one we've got here for what we're paying ($68NZ/night) in Aspen, the town to which Queenstown is most frequently compared. It also is quite possible that I'm so enamored with the place because I got the best haircut I've had in years this morning.
And where else could we feed alpaca (their coats are so soft!), llama, Himalayan Thar, Tibetan Yak, and American Bison all in the same place?
