March 4, 2008 - Catlins Coast

We woke up to a sunny, calm morning (finally!). Sitting on the porch with another traveler, enjoying our morning coffee as we watched the surf, we considered staying right there for the rest of the day. But the rear brakes had been acting up on the car, so we figured that we had better push on to Dunedin to get them checked out before the end of the work week.
The highlights of today's drive were a few nice short walks to see waterfalls and Nugget Point, a steep promontory jutting out into the sea. Sea lions and fur seals lolled on the rocks at the bottom of the cliff. Scattered just offshore of Nugget Point are a set of jagged rocks called "The Nuggets." We watched a fishing boat bucking in the seas as it worked just beyond the Nuggets and were very thankful that we were exploring this stretch of coast by land, rather than boat.
