January 18, 2009 - Penang, Malaysia

Parts of Georgetown remind us of cities in the Deep South, like New Orleans, Savannah and Charleston. Like those atmospheric cities, this place has tropical decay down to an art form.
And then other parts of this city make us feel like we've stepped back in time to the heyday of the British Empire, and that we've somehow transported ourselves to British India.
But as we sit in a hawker center, slurping down noodles, watching beautiful Tamil women walk by in their colorful saris, it is clear that Penang has a magic all its own.
